Netherlands Group Tour - Leg 6: EHHV - EHKD

I hope you all have reached Midden-Zeeland aerodrome during the PAPA HOTEL Virtual Flying Club Netherlands Group Tour. During the last 2 legs I’ve experienced some technical issues that kept me grounded. I hope I can solve this issue before the next date and join you on leg 5 to our next destination: EHHV Hilversum.

Description

We’ve arrived in Hilversum, the city of radio and television! But that’s not what we’re here for. It’s one of the Netherlands classic general aviation aerodromes with its short grass runways. Departing Hilversum will be a lot easier that landing though. But what comes next might not be! We’ve promised to visit ALL of the Netherlands general aviation airfields, but Schiphol might not be appropriate to try to land at when it’s busy.

Straight after departing EHHV Hilversum aerodrome, we’re going to contact Schiphol Tower at 121.930. We’re going to request entrance of their CTR via the VICTOR Arrival, cross the airfield mid-field and exit towards Noordwijk. If you’re daring enough you could request an orbit or two around the control tower for sight seeing.

After exiting the Schiphol CTR we’ll continue south east towards Katwijk and Noordwijk, before turning north along the coast. Here we’ll pass the famous Huis ter Duin hotel in Noordwijk, a luxurious 5 star hotel where many of the world’s leaders stay when they visit the Netherlands. If you look closely, it’s got its own helipad on the south west side, next to the hotel’s beach club.

Further north we’ll pass Circuit Park Zandvoort, the venue of the Dutch Grand Prix (F1), the locks of IJmuiden and the TATA Steel plant on the north side of the locks. At the seaside village of Egmond aan Zee, we’ll turn east and fly towards the old city of Alkmaar, famous for its cheese market. Further to the east we’ll fly over the old Dutch East Indies Company cities Hoorn and Enkhuizen, both located on the shores of the former Zuider Sea.

At Enkhuizen we’ll turn north west again and prepare our approach into EHMM Middenmeer aerodrome. Before choosing you aircraft, keep in mind that the aerodrome is only ‘available for national civil air traffic with all types of aircraft up to 890 KG AUW’, according to the eAIP from Luchverkeersleiding Nederlands. The VFR approach starts at a large complex of greenhouses, clearly marked by a large piramide like object in the default scenery. That’s one good reason to download and install the scenery, that fixes the issue, when you’re flying on PC! With its 600 meters, or 1969 feet, grass runway, it’s one of the shorted fields we’ve been to, or at all on our tour. In real life, the airfield is mainly used by ultra light and light sport aircraft.

After our visit to Middenmeer, we’ll exit the circuit to the south west and turn back east towards the town of Medemblik after the greenhouse complex, before following coastline to the north.

At the south west end of the former island Wieringen, we’ll enter the Den Helder De Kooy CTR and fly the VFR ECHO Arrival. Like Eindhoven, De Kooy is a joined civil and naval air base that uniquely combines military helicopter operations, civil aviation, and offshore support flights. We’ll be visiting the local flight club located near taxiways D and D1.

If you’ve joined us for all legs so far, well done! You’ve made it through perhaps the most difficult leg of the tour. You’ve now completed 688 nautical miles and little over 6 hours and 52 minutes of air time. We’ve got ‘only’ 371 NM and 3 hours and 50 minutes of tour left.

Live Stream

‘What happens if I can’t make it?’ Well, don’t you worry! We’ve designed and shared all information so that, if you can’t join us online, you can fly the route yourself. If you do want to take part, but rather not fly online, you can always join us during our live stream. That’s right! PAPA HOTEL Dutch Scenery Design will live stream ALL legs of the Netherlands Group Tour on our YouTube Channel!
