The PAPA HOTEL Virtual Flying Club Netherlands Group Tour has touched down at EHKD Den Helder/De Kooy in the north west corner of the country. Description

We finished our last leg at the Aeroclub Maritime, located on the military apron near taxiway’s D and D1. We will depart this joined civil and military airfield via the VFR WHISKEY Departure. This will give us the opportunity to have a look at the large marine base located on the east side of the city. This is the home of the Royal Netherlands Navy and many of its fleet may be seen anchored in the harbour.

After leaving the Den Helder CTR, we’ll turn east towards Texel’s largest village Den Burg and head towards visual reporting point ALPHA, from where we’ll be flying the VFR approach into Texel. The flight Den Helder to Texel is a really short one, so you can take your time exploring the island’s south coast as long as we’re not interfering with the traffic in the Den Helder CTR.

Texel is the largest Dutch Wadden Island, renowned for its diverse landscapes and is famous for its Texel sheep. They are a local breed known for their high-quality wool and meat. There are more sheep than people living on the island. More than double the 14.000 residents in fact.

We are about to arrive at arguably the most friendly and hospitable aerodrome in the Netherlands. Texel International Airport is a small airfield with 2 short grass runways, a wonderful museum and is home of the Paracenter Texel. With good weather this is bussing place where Cessna’s, C206’s and C208’s fly on and off dropping skydivers from 10.000 feet over this stunning scenery. As this is one of the shortest legs of the tour, it’s a great place to practice your take-offs and landings and give the IVAO controllers a run for their money.

After we’re done doing our things at Texel, we’ll depart via the VFR ECHO Departure. After visual reporting point ECHO, we’ll follow the shoreline to the lighthouse and cross over to the island of Vlieland. By the way, it’s after 5 o’clock in the evening when we do the flight, so you shouldn’t be worried being busted by fighter jets. We’re about to over fly the Vliehors, a large sand plane on the south side of Vlieland and best known for its Royal Netherlands Air Force shooting range.

After flying over the Vliehors, we’ll continue following the coastline of the islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. At the most eastern edge of Terschelling, we’re approaching our destination and turn northeast, over the North Sea, to keep clear of the circuit pattern of EHAL Ameland. It’s a beautiful strip to practice your short field landings, as the runway is only 860 meters long. You’ve got plenty time to do some extra touch ‘n go’s before finally shutting down at a parking spot near the tower.
